Whether your child is a new-comer to the game or an experienced hand, playing chess is a fun way to stay mentally sharp, make friends and learn a game that can stay with them through the rest of their life. Our approach is to teach the game, tactics and strategy, while putting special emphasis on sportsmanship.

The ‘50s Fun, FEAR and Rock ‘n’ Roll
PRESENTED BY THE ARTS COUNCIL FOR LONG BEACH
Ten years ago, Arts Council for Long Beach signed an agreement with the Smithsonian Institution on behalf of the City of Long Beach to bring arts, culture and scholar’s from our nation’s museums to Long Beach. Every year, ACLB presents 7 days and 7 nights of free in-school and community events and presentations and a gala event. This year, the Smithsonian Week theme is The ‘50s, Fun, FEAR, and Rock ‘n’ Roll. Topics include paint-by-numbers, product promotion through parade floats and window displays, and the birth of the “jet set.” Fears of the cold war, Communism, and the bomb present the other side of the /0s. School children will discover and adults recall this unforgettable decade. Scores of community partners join the arts council to support this annual festival of learning.
Most events are free, but reservations are usually required.

First Fridays continues to evolve and grow in Bixby Knolls. Businesses are gearing up for the next First Fridays Long Beach on Friday, March 7, 2008.
New for March 7:
· Councilwoman Rae Gabelich’s 8th District Field Office featuring the photography of local resident and former police officer, David Cooper.
· The Bixby Knolls Business Improvement Association will be featuring artwork from Kari Barba, Shawn Humiston, Shorty, Will Thompson and the stylings of beat poet Mike Sonksen.
· Mod-L-Mania will launch its “Best jazz records of all time series” featuring Miles Davis’ “Kind of Blue,” and The Dave Brubeck Quartet’s “Time Out”
· The Historical Society of Long Beach will be kicking off their Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition exhibit: The Way We Worked in the main and south galleries.
· It’s A Grind will provide music.
· You Can Sing Karaoke will be open for the public to come and sing songs.
· Tuttle Cameras will feature photo exhibits from Bohdan "Rob" Pywowarczuk.
Nino’s Italian Restaurant, is proud to present the re-incarnation of the Oasis Gallery, which will feature two Long Beach artists. Craig Anderson believes that composition as well as the bold use of color in unexpected juxtaposition offers myriad opportunities for experimentation. Peter Dopulos is a Long Beach resident who works exclusively in stone using only hand tools. Despite the ancient form of art he explores, his pieces are amazingly contemporary and fresh. “Stone is interesting because you’re creating with the very bones of the earth.” Nino’s will also kick-off their new Happy Hour menu, so come out and support your local artists and businesses. Four Olives Café is proud to exhibit the works of Lisa Tuggle. This body of work is comprised of a figure series, a psychological study, and a sociopolitical statement. Lisa is moving towards abstraction and paints intuitively. Her work comes to fruition and inevitably evokes the surprising use of color that culminates in a vibrant dynamic. Also, live music for the event will be provided from 7pm to 10pm by The Scarlett and Dr. Bob Finney Jazz Combo
FreeSpirit Yoga will feature Carmen Rickter, Portrait Artist “To me, art is a reflection of the soul and when I draw my purpose is to convey my deepest feelings through my subject. Having a natural talent for drawing and possessing highly sensitive emotions are strong characteristics of a good artist. It also requires love for the act and dedication. The process of creating [art] is extremely intimate and healing for the soul. My hope is that the viewer will see my love for art and personally benefit from the end result” Other featured artist: Roz Wiley. These current works stem from the desire to create art meant to elicit a sense of inner beauty and strength in the observer. Working in many mediums, the pieces in this exhibit are mainly acrylic and tempera on canvas or wood. She hopes you will enjoy her work as much as she has enjoyed creating it for you. She lives in Los Angeles with her muses.
THOR Antiques will be featuring art and light appetizers and wine.
The Richard Goad Theater presents Midsummer Night’s Dream by the Long Beach Shakespeare Company.
Mirage Café hosts its open mic night every Friday: Poets & Musicians!

The mission of First Fridays is to promote and support local artists and musicians by providing them with an outlet to showcase their work. Every first Friday night of the month, participating Bixby Knolls businesses will unite to promote local artists and musicians through extended operating hours. In doing so we hope to encourage a dialogue between businesses, artists and the community.

Arts Council for Long Beach is offering a free grants workshop. each year the Arts Council hands out grants totaling $300000 to individual artists, art programs and art groups. I attended a workshop last night (Feb. 11) at Houghton Park. We learned about which grants were available for different programs, how to write grants and how the process proceeds once you put in your application. For anyone working as an artist, or in art programs, this would be an incredibly useful workshop to attend.
There are three more dates available. All workshops are free, but reservations are required.

This official “V-Day” event will include a “mini” performance of “The Vagina Monologues” with readings by a talented cast of local ladies including poet Donna Hilbert, Myriam Joseph, Kerri Zane, Leanna Rodgers, Becky Skoglund and Kim Porche. The event will also include a delicious appetizer and dessert buffet, silent auction and a showing of the documentary film, “Until the Violence Stops” in the intimate and charming “The Backroom” of Morry’s at 5764 E. 2nd Street, on Naples Island in Long Beach. Minimum donation for tickets is $45.00.
Proceeds from this event will benefit both “WomenShelter of Long Beach,” which has been serving Long Beach with the mission of ending the cycle of domestic violence through education, intervention and prevention for over thirty years, as well the “V-Day” organization itself.

V-Day is a global movement to end violence against women and girls that raises funds and awareness through benefit productions of Playwright/Founder Eve Ensler’s award winning play “The Vagina Monologues.”
Since 1998, thousands of V-Day events have taken place all over the world, Shenzhen, China to Stockholm, Sweden from Canberra, Australia to Lagos, Nigeria. In 2007 alone, more than 3000 V-Day events took place around the world and in all 50 of the United States. 2008 will be V-Day’s biggest year to date as we come together to celebrate the last ten years of ending violence against women and girls and go forward into the next ten years.
To date, the V-Day movement has raised over $50 million and educated millions about the issue of violence against women and the efforts to end it, crafted international educational, media and PSA campaigns, launched the Karama program in the Middle East, reopened shelters, and funded over 5000 community-based anti-violence programs and safe houses in Kenya, South Dakota, Egypt and Iraq.

Bixby Knolls Business Improvement Association 4313 Atlantic Avenue, will be opening its doors as a venue for First Fridays and will feature:

Matt Reid Cohn is a Long Beach native. He studied music at Millikan High School and the University of Southern California before embarking on a music career, which has now spanned 30 years. Matt Reid Cohn developed his photography skills during his travels, with the 1980’s L.A. based rock band "Berlin" and particularly enjoys photographing neon. His work has been published in the Washington Post and various Route 66 travel journals.

....gets his name from his nocturnal sojourns, seeking the glow of the neon light. He transmutes that vibration into his mixes. DJ Neon Hunter provides an eclectic blend of music and sound.. He's more "chill" than "frenetic," more "off-beat" than "predictable."
Chroma Glass Designs will host an artist reception from 7pm-10pm. Featured artists are painter Carol Hendriks and mixed media artist Dawn Morishige.

I want to create tension through the use of color, composition and image. The act of taking a personal life experience and translating it into a visual expression transforms my perception. My goal as an artist is to reach out and in the act of sharing those perceptions, give birth to a new experience for myself as well as providing an arena for others to do the same.

My work involves layering different materials. I use film, fiber photos, wood, metal, resin, paper, fabric, enamel, dry pigment, and acrylic medium. My pieces are either created in screen form, free hanging panels or layered etched film that create a 3 dimensional sculptural image. My work questions assumptions of imagery and category. My images are influenced by the pictorialists. The single tree, a blurred building, the haunting feeling of the familiar yet unfamiliar. My images are also influenced by the craft of design, particularly Japanese design.

I am twenty-four years old and a full time student at Long Beach City College where I am a sponge for the arts, and general education. Art to me is prayer and spirituality. It is therapy, meditation and enjoyment as it tortures and gratifies me at the same time.
