Hello and welcome to LB Local. I put this site up as place where Long Beach residents and their neighbors could share events, concerns, thoughts, announcements- whatever neighbors might share with each other. Life is getting busier and more complicated it seems, so hopefully this site can help you to stay in touch with your surroundings and help foster a greater sense of community. Some of my own interests include art, cooking and the environment, so that's where I've started. I was a chef for 15 years, and for the last 7 or so I owned a catering company. Now I'm a stone sculptor and a stay-at-home dad. But I have a restless mind and too much energy so I dabble in a number of other things. And along the way I've met some very interesting people, some of whom appear on these pages. If you have something to contribute to our community, please contact me: peter@lblocal.com

11/01 The Los Angeles County Bicycle Coalition

On January 2, 2007 the LA Times ran a n article a woman with a passion for cycling and a dream that many would think was nuts. The woman's name is Monica Howe and she works for an unlikely organization called the The Los Angeles County Bicycle Coalition (LACBC) whose vision is:

We envision a Los Angeles County that is a great place for everyday, year-round cycling. Bicycles are accepted as an integral part of our transportation system, culture, and communities. People of all ages, abilities, and cultures travel as cyclists, pedestrians, and motorists safely and simultaneously. Cyclists enjoy equal access to roads and trails, and share the same rights and responsibilities as other users. Air is cleaner, streets are safer and quieter, and people and the environment are healthier.

Now I'm an avid cyclist, whether its just putting around the neighborhood on my new-fangled chopper with the kids, or the occasional weekend rides on the road bike. But these people are crazy - crazy like me. They want LA to become an urban paradise for cyclists and I'm all for it. These people are putting their money where their mouth is and advocating for greater safety, a greener city, and a healthier population. Check out their site, they have a number of group rides, safety tips and plenty of resource links. They also have a link to the LA Times story on their site.

19/10 Hosting Problems

Long story short- I haven't been able to access LB Local for about three weeks. But problem solved and lots of new info coming at you, including a return of Oasis? Well sort of. The gallery part of Oasis will be coming to a shop near you_ check back for more in the next couple of days.

20/09 Summer is Over - Thank Goodness!

I never thought I would say it, but that was the longest summer of my life. Not bad- just looong. The problem with having a six-year-old and a one-year-old is that what the six-year-old wants to do the one-year-old can't. And what the the one-year-old can do, the six-year-old doesn't want to do. Add to that some car troubles and two birthday parties to throw and well you've got yourself a challenging summer.

Of course, now school has started and I'm the new PTA President, there really is no reprieve. Hopefully, however, I can update LB Local a bit more regularly. For those foodies come back regularly since I hacve a bunch of Fall/Winter recipes to share.
